I also change the sheet name to the machine I am using. In this screen we will have to change the scale to be 1:1. Your sheet should look something like this. I am using a VLS4.60 so my workarea is 610mm x 457mm. Now we want to change the sheet size to the workarea. The first is to go to solidworks and select make a drawing.

If you already made a drawing jump to step 2. If you have any questions or are missing information in this tutorial please leave a comment below so I can update the tutorial.įirst I always like to make a template that fits the materials processing envelope (workarea) of the CNC machine I am going to use. This is paid software if you want to use free software I recommend using Fusion 360 for 3D modeling and Inkscape for vector image editing. I will be using Solidworks and Adobe Illustrator in this tutorial. I will be focusing on a laser cutter in this tutorial.

I hope you’ve found this tutorial helpful, please let me know if you’ve got any design questions on the tutorial in the comments section below and let me know if there are any other tutorials you’re interested in.In this tutorial, I will explain and give tips for converting your Solidworks drawing to a vector file that CNC machines can read. So now you know how to design and build your own Pi cases using free software and a diode or CO2 laser cutter. It looks like our Pi fits into our case perfectly. You can also add a 40mm fan to the lid and secure it using the included M3 screws and nuts. Next install the Pi into the case using some 6mm brass standoffs, M2.5 nuts and M2.5 button head screws. I usually use PVA wood glue and either clamp or tape the components together for an hour or two while the glue dries. With the components cut out, we can then glue them together. I cut these components out using a speed of 250mm/min and the laser power at 90%. I use LaserGRBL to control my diode laser machines as it’s easy to use and free. The 20W diode is much faster than the 5W and 10W diodes and the air assist keeps the cuts really clean. I’m going to cut these on the Atomstack X20 Pro, this is a fantastic machine for cutting plywood and MDF sheets. With the case design completed, let’s get the case components cut out and see how it looks. Laser Cut Pi Case Design Download Cutting The Case Components Out
